The Tra Su bird sanctuary is not mentioned in the Lonely Planet guidebook, yet it is a highlight in our latest tour collection. Home to millions of birds and rich in wildlife, the 850 hectare wetland sanctuary is an ideal destination from nature lovers and bird watchers. Cruise on a row boat under the cajuput canopy and enjoy sighting the wild birds and listening to the symphony of nature. The Mekong Delta as the world’s largest delta will welcome you with its lush scenery and warm-hearted inhabitants. The tour includes a one night stay in a bungalow and ends with a day trip to a typically Southern style floating market in Can Tho city.

Day 1: Saigon – Cai Be – Mekong Lodge (L,D)

Morning, pickup at your hotel to transfer about 136 km to the Mekong Delta, the world’s largest delta and Vietnam’s largest rice bowl. The delta is characterized by a vast landscape of lush islands, peaceful villages and crisscrossing waterways. At Cai Be quay, board a boat and start cruising down the Mekong River and enjoying sighting along the way. Arrive at Mekong Lodge, an iconic resort of the delta right on the river, check in your private bungalow and have lunch at a riverside restaurant.

Afternoon, begin a walking tour to discover the nearby villages around Mekong Lodge. Visit some households living on making coconut candy and bricks to observe their production practices. Meet and talk with local villagers to experience their Southern warm-heartedness and hospitality.

In the evening, get a hands-on culinary experience by joining a Vietnamese cooking class. Mekong Lodge’s experienced chefs will instruct you to prepare the lodge’s signature dishes. Have fun learning about ingredients and testing out the recipes which you will take home as a gift. Enjoy a self-cooked dinner at the lodge after the class.


Day 2: Mekong Lodge – Chau Doc (B,L)

Morning, after breakfast, get on a row sampan to visit Cai Be floating market, a prominent feature of the delta lifestyle. Hundreds of boats gathering for the early morning with their market session will make a lively scene. Sellers and buyers bargain and exchange goods from their boats and sometimes use bamboo poles as a means of delivery.

Come back to Mekong Lodge and start a cycling tour of the delta. Cycling on winding lanes, crossing canals, breathing the fresh air while sighting beautiful views along the way. Stop to visit some local orchards and taste fresh fruits picked from trees. Before noon, cycle back to Mekong Lodge for check out and transfer by boat back to Cai Be quay. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and continue to transfer to Chau Doc border town. Visit Sam Mountain where you can cast your view over the whole town underneath and across the border into Cambodia. Stay overnight in Chau Doc.

Day 3: Tra Su bird watching – Can Tho (B,L)

Morning, after breakfast, transfer to U Minh Thuong National park to visit Tra Su bird sanctuary. As a wetland area thickly forested by cajuputs and spanning over 850 hectares, Tra Su provides refuge to 70 species of birds of which some are on the endangered list. Cruise deep into the cajuput forest and enjoy sighting storks, cranes, oriental darters and many other wild birds as well as listening to their sounds. Getting to the far side of the forest, you can climb on the 23 meter-high observation tower to get a panoramic view of the forest with flocks of birds on the canopy.

Next, take a motorboat trip to visit a floating fish farm where fishes are reared in cages on a river. Move on to call in a village inhabited by Cham minority people who are still practicing their long-standing trade of traditional weaving. Go back to Chau Doc for lunch and check out your hotel to depart for Can Tho. Arrive in Can Tho in the late afternoon and check in your hotel. Dinner on your own account and overnight in Can Tho.

Day 4: Can Tho floating market - City tour (B,L)


Morning, depart from Ninh Kieu Quay on a shuttle boat. Cruising down Can Tho River gives you a good chance to observe bustling activities on the river and along its banks. Arrive at Cai Rang floating market, the biggest of its type in the Mekong region. During the early morning market hours, larger sized boats anchor by the side creating lanes for smaller boats to move in and out.  Laden with with fruits, farm produce and assorted consumer goods, hundreds of boats converge to trade and serving all types of market-goers. Proceed to a local rice mill to see how locals process paddy into commercial rice.

Afternoon, explore more about history and culture of the region by visiting the Can Tho Cultural Museum with 5000 objects and historical relics showcasing people and land of the delta and Vong Cung road formerly referred to as the Arc of Fire for being a frontline during the war. Move on to the Holy See Temple of a rare monotheistic religion called Cao Dai or “Way of the Highest Lord” native to South Vietnam. It however, incorporates aspects of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and even Catholicism. Next, call in an orchard to relax and enjoy fresh fruits before visiting a 135-year antique house and Binh Thuy Temple which was built in 1844 in dedication to a local village guardian. Overnight in Can Tho.


Day 5: Can Tho - Saigon (B)

Breakfast and free time before transferring back to Saigon.
